An implant (an implanted denture) consists of up to three components and is usually placed in three steps.
First the dentist places an artificial “root” in the jawbone. This is a surgical procedure under local anaesthesia. The artificial root is usually made of titanium. A healing phase follows (6–12 weeks for the lower jaw and up to 6 months for the upper jaw), during which the patient is fitted with a temporary restoration.
Once healing is complete, a connecting piece (abutment) is screwed into the artificial “root”. This creates an artificial “tooth” which then carries the crown, bridge or denture.

Step by step
The path to an implant
From the first examination to the finished crown, several weeks to months pass depending on the jaw. The bone needs that time to fuse firmly with the implant — a temporary restoration bridges the gap.
2. Placing the root
The artificial titanium root is placed in the jawbone under local anaesthesia — a small surgical procedure.
3. Healing phase
6 to 12 weeks in the lower jaw, up to 6 months in the upper jaw. During this time you wear a temporary restoration and come in for short check-ups.
4. Crown, bridge or denture
The visible restoration is fitted onto the connecting piece (abutment) — matched in shape, colour and position to your remaining teeth.
When an implant is an option
- For a single gap, without grinding down healthy neighbouring teeth
- As a pillar for bridges when several teeth are missing
- As a firm hold for a denture that used to shift
- Requirements: sufficient bone, healthy gums and good oral hygiene
- If there is too little bone, a bone graft often comes first
What keeps an implant in place long term
Implants cannot develop caries, but the surrounding gum can become inflamed. Careful cleaning at home, regular check-ups and professional teeth cleaning therefore remain part of the routine. Smoking and untreated periodontitis are the most common reasons why an implant loosens again later on.
